What it means to me to be a geek – Speak Out With Your Geek Out
Hi, I’m Eryn Sophia and I’m geek.
People debate back and forth about what it means to be a “geek”. I had written a lengthy explanation, but after a while I felt like it was actually more simple
While being a “geek” seems most often to be associated with things like movies or comic and video games I think it’s really about being enthusiastic! Wanting to share that passion other and understanding others’ passions. I get excited about things I love, whether it’s Star Wars or designer shoes, and I get together with friends that are either just as excited as me or can completely empathize with my enthusiasm! How much more positive can you get beyond that?
This week Speak Out With Your Geek Out is about being proud of your geekiness. Now that I’ve explained what I feel being a geek is to me here’s my past on being a geek from my personal bio, what’s yours?
Speak Out With Your Geek Out Event Info: Facebook Event / Tumblr Blog / WebsiteIt’s hard to explain everything I get into; I like being a geek. Comics, games, movies, toys, art, and more (along with the stereotypical shoes and purses ^_^). And costumes. I love costumes.
Since I was little I was raised as a geek girl. Nothing makes me happier than escaping into fandom and sharing it with others.
My interests in gaming started with tabletop RPs. I grew up regularly watching my father and his friends play D&D and other games, but being a toddler I couldn’t join. Eventually we got a personal computer, an Amiga. It was my first introduction into electronic gaming and I spent many hours honing my skills with Marble Madness. I eventually became absorbed in DDR and Tomb Raider games, college studies and expenses later delayed getting further into other gaming or using consoles besides a Frankenstiened PC . Now I can often be found shouting at zombies as well as attempting to rescue princesses.
Cosplay has always been a hobby. I’ve been dressing up and attending conventions for more than half of my life now. The earliest I remember was wanting to be Alice from Alice in Wonderland, who was later usurped by Leeloo from The Fifth Element ^_^ I spent a cold halloween trick or treating and not a single person knowing who I was. Over the years now I’ve accumulated a collection of comic, game, and fantasy costumes!
My parents are responsible for my fondness comics and books. They have always been around, so much that I can’t recall the first that I ever picked up. My father always had stacks of collected editions, both his own and borrowed, alongside art books from his favorite fantasy masters. My mother is an avid Lord of the Rings lover and collector of victorian murder mysteries. From all this I came to love old school and new Scifi/Fantasy alike, and am also a manga fangirl but love the big names of DC and Marvel as well as smaller publishers.
Today I try my best to have as much fun as possible.

I think geek is the opposite of what was “cool” in junior high school.
The “Too cool for school” attitude/mentality, being aloof, not caring about stuff or being above it all; geek is the opposite of that.
Yeah I like lots of different stuff, I get excited about it all and I’m unapologetic about it.

I once heard “geek” defined as “someone with a passionate obsession about a particular niche topic of interest.” I’ve always liked that definition, because it shows that everyone is a little bit of a geek. Of course, an übergeek would be somone with a passionate obsession about a diverse group of interests.
I like to think of myself as a bit of an übergeek.
